FccV Scholar Spotlight: Jackson Miller
Official Vision Statement
“Four Corners Creative Vision facilitates artistic inspiration and personal enrichment by bringing incoming Utah State University scholars to world-class art museums in U.S. cultural centers. Participants will engage with artists, docents, and art experts to expand their understanding of the world of visual art and what it means to be an artist. By funding these immersive journeys, we don’t just offer a trip; we are building a bridge where rural tradition meets the creative process of urban innovation, proving that when we color outside the lines, we create a more vibrant, connected world for us all.”
A. Scholar Profile
- FccV Participating Scholar: Jackson Miller
- Hometown: Morgan, Utah
- Academic Focus: BFA in Sculpture & Interdisciplinary Design at Utah State University
- Cohort Year: 2025
B. The Journey: Urban Innovation
- Destination: New York City and the Hudson Valley, New York
- Featured Institutions: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Storm King Art Center.
- Expert Engagement: Jackson engaged in a technical walk-through with a lead conservator at Storm King, discussing the structural integrity and weathering of large-scale steel installations.
C. The Creative Bridge
- Rural Roots: Coming from a family ranch, Jackson’s experience with metal and stone was primarily functional—fixing machinery and building fences. To him, “industrial” meant “utility.”
- Visual Discovery: Seeing the massive, abstract steel works of Richard Serra and Alexander Calder in NYC transformed his view of heavy materials. He saw that steel could occupy space not just to hold a weight, but to hold a feeling.
- Bridging the Gap: Jackson began to see the rusted textures of old farm equipment as a medium for fine art. He realized the tools of his rural upbringing could be the instruments of urban-inspired innovation.
D. Coloring Outside the Lines
- Personal Enrichment: “I used to think that because I grew up in a small town, I was limited to ‘traditional’ art. This program showed me that my background is actually a superpower; I have a unique perspective on the materials that build our world.”
- The Vision Portfolio: Yield & Tension — A series of reclaimed-iron sculptures that use traditional welding techniques to create fluid, organic shapes inspired by Manhattan’s modern architecture.
E. Legacy of Innovation
- Scholar Impact: Jackson’s time as an FCCV participating scholar has redefined his approach to three-dimensional design. He returns to USU with a mission to prove that rural grit and urban elegance are two sides of the same creative coin.
- Attribution: This experience was made possible by the Four Corners Creative Vision (FccV) program.
